Linux creator Linus Torvalds is joined by executives, IT managers and developers from The Apache Software Foundation, Intel, Microsoft, Red Hat, Parallels, Renesas and more to discuss the growth of Linux and other open source and cloud technologies
TOKYO, April 28, 2014 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced the keynote speakers for Japan’s premier Linux and open source events, LinuxCon and CloudOpen.
LinuxCon Japan and CloudOpen Japan take place May 20-22, 2014 at the Chinzan-so Hotel & Conference Center in Tokyo, Japan.
LinuxCon Japan is Asia’s premier Linux conference, bringing together a unique blend of core developers, administrators, users, community managers and industry experts. It encourages collaboration and helps support interaction between Japan, other Asia Pacific countries, and the rest of the global Linux community.
For the second year, CloudOpen Japan will provide a collaborative and educational space to advance the open cloud. CloudOpen Japan brings together the open source projects, products and companies that are driving the cloud and big data ecosystems today, along with best practices from the world of traditional open source. Both LinuxCon Japan and CloudOpen Japan are included in one registration fee for attendees.
LinuxCon and CloudOpen Japan are co-located with Puppet Camp Tokyo 2014, which occurs at the same venue on May 19. Puppet Camps are community-oriented, regional gatherings of Puppet users and developers. Puppet Camp Tokyo will provide an opportunity to talk to a diverse group of Puppet users, benefit from presentations delivered by prominent community members, share experiences, and discuss potential implementations of Puppet with the community.
Additionally, LinuxCon Japan 2014 will feature LinuxCon Staging, which provides the opportunity for university students studying computer science to meet and interact with international and Asian Linux kernel developers and learn how they can participate as an active Linux developer. Special lectures on participating in the Linux community by top Linux kernel developers from Japan and around the world will be offered to student attendees, in addition to having access to other LinuxCon and CloudOpen sessions.
The following confirmed keynote speakers and presentations will set the stage for discussion on such topics as big data, cloud computing, virtualization, mobile and embedded development, and kernel development.
Confirmed keynote speakers and topics include:
- James Bottomley, CTO of sever virtualization at Parallels, will deliver a report on the status of the Linux kernel
- Rich Bowen, executive director of The Apache Software Foundation, will talk about the spread of open source technologies
- Ross Gardler, senior technology evangelist, Microsoft Open Technologies, will talk about Microsoft’s open source activities
- Hisao Munakata, executive manager, Renesas, will cover the value corporations receive from working with the open source community
- Linus Torvalds, inventor of Linux, and Dirk Hohndel, chief open source technologist, Intel, will discuss the state of Linux kernel development
- Neela Jacques, executive director of the OpenDaylight Project, will discuss how the networking industry is reinventing itself through open source collaboration in the OpenDaylight project
- The Kernel Developer Panel will feature leading kernel developers and maintainers who will provide insights into the state of the Linux kernel as well as ongoing and future work
- Participating kernel developers include James Bottomley, Thomas Gleixner, Greg Kroah-Hartman, Steven Rostedt, and Daniel Veillard
- A Cloud Panel, featuring a discussion on the latest in virtualization and open cloud technologies, moderated by Fernando Luis Vazquez Cao, principal software engineer at NTT Open Software Center and senior consultant at NTT Data Intellilink.
